code of conduct
At Rayuela Swing, we are committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and joyful environment for everyone in our community. This code of conduct outlines the principles we uphold to ensure all participants feel safe, respected, and valued. By attending our classes, workshops, and events, you agree to abide by these guidelines.
**1. Respect Gender-Neutral Language**
- Use inclusive and respectful language when addressing others, avoiding assumptions about gender identity or pronouns.
- If you are unsure of someone’s pronouns, ask politely or use gender-neutral language until clarified.
**2. Zero Tolerance for Bigotry, Racism, and Fascism**
- Rayuela Swing is a space free from discrimination, harassment, and hate.
- Any form of bigotry, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or other oppressive behavior is strictly prohibited.
- Symbols or statements promoting fascism or hate are not allowed.
**3. No Tolerance for Misogynistic, Homophobic, or Racist Language or Actions**
- Misogynistic, homophobic, racist, or otherwise prejudiced language and actions will not be admitted in any form.
- Participants engaging in such behavior will face immediate consequences, including potential removal from the class or event.
**4. Prioritize Consent**
- Always ask before inviting someone to dance. A simple “Would you like to dance?” is sufficient.
- Accept “no” graciously and without question. No one is obligated to explain their decision.
- Practice active consent during dances. Communicate clearly and respectfully if a movement or interaction feels uncomfortable.
**5. Hygiene and Cleanliness**
- Arrive at classes, parties, and events clean and well-groomed to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
- Use deodorant or antiperspirant, and bring a change of clothes or towel if needed.
- Bring extra shirts to class so you can change if necessary.
**6. Empower the Right to Say No**
- We encourage everyone to prioritize their comfort and safety by saying “no” if they do not wish to dance or engage in an activity.
- Students should support and respect one another’s boundaries without pressure or judgment.
**7. Prioritize Vulnerable Individuals**
- Be attentive to the needs of individuals who may be more vulnerable to microaggressions or harm, including those targeted by racial profiling, ableism, ageism, misogyny, or homophobia.
- Offer assistance when appropriate, but always ask first and respect their response.
**8. Support for Older AND DISABLED Students and Preventing Forced Moves**
- Take care to ensure that older and disabled students feel comfortable and supported during classes and events.
- Be mindful not to force dance moves or techniques on others before they are ready. Encourage a patient and respectful approach to learning and practicing.
**9. Microaggressions and Vulnerable Boundaries**
- Cases of microaggressions against others will be handled with care and sensitivity.
- The boundaries of the person in a position of vulnerability will be taken seriously, with actions aimed at ensuring their comfort and safety.
**10. Domestic Violence and Harassment History**
- In cases where domestic violence or previous experiences of harassment amongst students have been reported, decisions will be made to prioritize the well-being and safety of those in vulnerability.
**11. Staff’s Right to Refuse Service**
- Our staff reserves the right to refuse service in situations where additional information or clarity is needed to make a fair and informed decision.
- Staff also reserves the right to refuse entry to classes or events if there have been reports against an individual, allowing time to address and investigate the accusations before making a decision.
**12. Accountability and External Support**
- We are not social workers or mental health providers. Therefore, individuals who have allegedly engaged in harmful actions will be asked to seek appropriate help outside our facilities.
**13. Addressing Concerns**
- If you witness or experience behavior that violates this code of conduct, please notify a Rayuela Swing staff member immediately.
- All reports will be handled confidentially and with care to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.
**14. Accountability**
- Individuals found in violation of this code may be asked to leave the class or event without a refund and may be barred from future participation.
By working together to uphold these principles, we can create a vibrant and supportive community where everyone can enjoy the joy of swing dancing. Thank you for helping us make Rayuela Swing a safe and inclusive space for all.
